The Market Town of Ledbury was established in the 12th century. Previously an Anglo-Saxon village named Liedeberge occupied the same site. Its origins are lost in the dark ages but it was apparently the site of a Minster Church and a Religious House from as early as the 8th Century. Except for the Norman Church relatively few buildings survive from the 12th Century. However a great deal of evidence for the early layout and growth of the town does still remain, as do many of its half timbered houses from the 15th and 16th Centuries. |
